The First Meeting of the present Club was held on 17 Dec 1991 at Teresa Lodge, Chippenham. On 11 Feb 1992. BUSTARD NEWS, the first Newsletter of the club was then produced. The bustard is the emblem of Wiltshire and appears on the county’s crest.
The initial meetings were concerned with an all out effort to acquire a suitable flying site, the Club Constitution, BMFA affiliation and setting up a Bank account.
From the above you will have gained the impression that the Club started at the end of 1991. That is not the whole story as during the 1980’s there was a small, but very active model flying club based at RAF Hullavington. It was primarily for RAF personnel although civilian members were permitted and indeed by the late 80’s, civilians were the major part of the membership.
Hullavington’s then resident gliding club was Bannerdown, now based at Keevil airfield. Six RAF Chipmunks used for air cadet training were also at Hullavington . The gliding club, the Chipmunks and the model club amicably agreed their respective air space.
Hullavington airfield was a regular venue for national BMFA events including scale, control line, free flight and indoor events.
When the RAF withdrew from Hullavington in 1991 the club found an additional site to rent at Queens Field, Sutton Benger.
The club continued to fly at Hullavington & Queens Field and renamed the North Wilts MAC.
Sadly, Hullavington became unavailable in April 2016 as MOD sold the site to Dyson.
